George Benjamin Lucks (1867-1933).

Pintor estadounidense nacido en Williamsport (Pensilvania) el 13 de agosto de 1867 y fallecido en la ciudad de Nueva York el 29 de octubre de 1933. Perteneció al grupo de pintores norteamericanos popularmente conocido como la Escuela de Ashcan, caracterizada por el tratamiento realista de las escenas urbanas.

Luks estudió en un principio en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania, en Filadelfia, y luego en Europa: en Alemania, Reino Unido (Londres) y Francia (París). Regresó a Estados Unidos en 1894 para trabajar como ilustrador en un periódico de Filadelfia. Durante ese período conoció al pintor Robert Henri y a otros ilustradores de prensa como John Sloan y William Glackens. Sirvió en Cuba en 1896 como artista corresponsal para el Boletín de Filadelfia durante la lucha por la independencia del país con respecto a España. Tras regresar a Estados Unidos, trabajó como caricaturista para el World de Nueva York. Fue entonces cuando comenzó a pintar lienzos realistas sobre el tema de los habitantes de Nueva York. Ejemplos notables son The Spielers, posiblemente su trabajo más famoso, y The Wrestlers.
